Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated skin condition characterized by erythematous plaques covered with silvery scales. It affects approximately 2-3% of the global population, mainly affecting people between ages of 15 and 35. Psoriasis can present in various forms, including plaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, and pustular psoriasis, each with its unique clinical features. Genetic factors, environmental triggers such as stress, infections, and certain medications play a significant role in predisposing individuals to psoriasis. In regards to pathophysiology, psoriasis involves abnormal immune activation, leading to hyperproliferation of keratinocytes and inflammation within the skin. Additionally, cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukins (IL-17 and IL-23) are implicated in the disease process, contributing to its chronicity and systemic presentation.
