Dapsone is an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drug that has been used in dermatology for many years to treat a range of skin conditions. Originally developed as an antibacterial medication, dapsone has been found to have potent anti-inflammatory properties as well, making it a valuable treatment option for various skin disorders.
Dapsone works by inhibiting bacterial growth and also has immunomodulatory effects. It is often used in the treatment of acne vulgaris, dermatitis herpetiformis, and various other skin conditions, including blistering disorders and autoimmune connective tissue diseases such as lupus erythematosus and dermatomyositis.
Dapsone is generally well-tolerated, although potential side effects include hemolytic anemia, methemoglobinemia, and peripheral neuropathy. Patients taking dapsone should be monitored regularly for these and other adverse effects. It is also important to note that dapsone may interact with other medications, including rifampicin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
In this learning module, you will find a comprehensive review of dapsone, including its mechanism of action, indications, contraindications, adverse effects, and drug interactions. You will also learn about the appropriate dosing and monitoring for patients receiving dapsone therapy.
