Acne vulgaris is characterized by the development of papules, pustules, or nodules most commonly on the face, with possible involvement of the neck, back, trunk, or proximal upper extremities which vary in number and size. The development of comedones and inflammation underlies the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris. Although acne vulgaris is most commonly found in adolescents and young adults, it can affect people of all ages. Additionally, common complications of acne vulgaris include hyperpigmentation, scarring, and negative psychological effects.
