Definition
LE is a multi-organ systemic disease with frequent skin, joints, hematologic, pulmonary, renal & CNS involvement variably.
Epidemiology
- 6 F : 1 M (systemic lupus erythematosus – SLE)
- 3 F : 1 M (cutaneous lupus erythematosus – CLE)
Risk Factors
- Female sex (strongest risk factor)
- Age: females of childbearing years
- Ethnicity: African-American women (4-fold ↑ risk, younger age, ↑ mortality), prevalence in Caucasian/ Asian/Latin Americans (1/1000).
Prognosis
- All types of CLE may progress to SLE
