Therapeutic

Mucosal disease

  • Topical antiseptics ±
  • antihistamine ± anesthetic rinses 
  • Oral antihistamines 
  • If identifiable precipitating factor: specific therapy (e.g.: chronic suppressive antiviral therapy)
  • Systemic corticosteroids (severe erythema multiforme with functional impairment)

Prophylaxis

  • For HSV-associated: 
    • Oral acyclovir (10 mg/kg/day in divided doses)
    • Valacyclovir (500–1000 mg daily)
    • Famciclovir (250 mg twice daily)
  • If resistant chronic EM: 
    • Azathioprine
    • Prednisone
    • Thalidomide
    • Dapsone 
    • Cyclosporine
    • Mycophenolate mofetil
    • Psoralen Ultraviolet A
