Reverse Pattern Analysis
WHAT IS REVERSE PATTERN ANALYSIS (RPA):¹⁻⁵⁻⁶
- Step-wise algorithm to diagnose lesions based on geometric terms.
BASIC STRUCTURES: (Five Geometric Terms)
- “Pattern” formed by repetition of a basic structure covering a significant portion of a lesion (≥ 20%).
- “Structureless” means no specific pattern stands out.
Term | Definition | Image |
---|---|---|
Lines (Basic) |
A form much longer than it is wide. |

Lines (Reticular) |
Lines forming mesh-like (lattice) pattern |
![]() |
Lines (Branched) |
Lines extend from the mainline (like branches/veins) | ![]() |
Lines (Parallel) |
Lines equidistant and do not intersect |
![]() |
Lines (Radial) |
Lines extend outwards from a central point (starburst) | ![]() |
Lines (Curvey) |
Lines without sharp angles (arc, waves) | ![]() |
Pseudopods |
Line with a rounded or swollen end |
![]() |
Circles |
Continuous curved line that stays fairly even in distance from a central point (inc. ellipses) | ![]() |
Clods | Defined object bigger than dot (any shape/colour) | ![]() |
Dots |
Small no-shape structure (x10 magnification) |

Blood Vessel Patterns
Monomorphous: Pattern (≥ 20%) of a single structure (n=1).
Polymorphous: Multiple patterns
