Reverse Pattern Analysis

WHAT IS REVERSE PATTERN ANALYSIS (RPA):¹⁻⁵⁻⁶
  • Step-wise algorithm to diagnose lesions based on geometric terms.
BASIC STRUCTURES: (Five Geometric Terms)
  • “Pattern” formed by repetition of a basic structure covering a significant portion of a lesion (≥ 20%).
  • “Structureless” means no specific pattern stands out.

Term Definition Image
Lines (Basic)

A form much longer than it is wide.

Lines (Reticular)

Lines forming mesh-like (lattice) pattern

Lines (Branched)

Lines extend from the mainline (like branches/veins)
Lines (Parallel)

Lines equidistant and do not intersect

Lines (Radial)

Lines extend outwards from a central point (starburst)

Lines (Curvey)

Lines without sharp angles (arc, waves)
Pseudopods

Line with a rounded or swollen end

Circles

Continuous curved line that stays fairly even in distance from a central point (inc. ellipses)
Clods Defined object bigger than dot (any shape/colour)
Dots

Small no-shape structure (x10 magnification)

Blood Vessel Patterns

Monomorphous: Pattern (≥ 20%) of a single structure (n=1).

Polymorphous: Multiple patterns
