Composed of lymphocytes, histiocytes, eosinophils, and neutrophils
Note: Infections caused by zoophilic dermatophytes are often more inflammatory, with the formation of vesicles filled with neutrophils (bullous tinea)
Compact orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis
- Variable spongiosis with occasional formation of intraepidermal or subcorneal pustules
- Hyphae are sometimes visible on H&E staining when present in large numbers within the stratum corneum
