Tinea corporis

LEGEND

Composed of lymphocytes, histiocytes, eosinophils, and neutrophils

Note: Infections caused by zoophilic dermatophytes are often more inflammatory, with the formation of vesicles filled with neutrophils (bullous tinea)

  • Compact orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis

  • Variable spongiosis with occasional formation of intraepidermal or subcorneal pustules
  • Hyphae are sometimes visible on H&E staining when present in large numbers within the stratum corneum

  • The “sandwich” sign may sometimes be observed, characterized by an alternation between basket-weave hyperkeratosis and compact hyperkeratosis
