Chromoblastomycosis – low magnification

LEGEND

  • Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia

    • Defined by marked, irregular acanthosis, intersecting in a somewhat chaotic manner

    • This finding is often indicative of an infection by mycobacteria or a deep fungal infection

  • Dense inflammatory infiltrate of the superficial and deep dermis

Chromoblastomycosis – inflammatory infiltrate

LEGEND

Granulomatous infiltrate (by definition containing multiple histiocytes) and suppurative (containing neutrophils)

In the presence of this type of infiltrate, one must always rule out a mycobacterial infection or a deep fungal infection

  • Histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells
  • Lymphocytes

  • Plasma cells

Chromoblastomycosis

LEGEND

  • Medlar bodies or copper pennies (appearance similar to black pennies) are characterized by clusters of brownish spores
  • Neutrophils
  • Multinucleated giant cells

Chromoblastomycosis

LEGEND

Presence of plasma cells and lymphocytes

  • Medlar bodies
  • Multinucleated giant cells
  • Collection of neutrophils

  • Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia
