Chromoblastomycosis – low magnification

LEGEND
Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia
-
Defined by marked, irregular acanthosis, intersecting in a somewhat chaotic manner
-
This finding is often indicative of an infection by mycobacteria or a deep fungal infection
-
Dense inflammatory infiltrate of the superficial and deep dermis
Chromoblastomycosis – inflammatory infiltrate

LEGEND
Granulomatous infiltrate (by definition containing multiple histiocytes) and suppurative (containing neutrophils)
In the presence of this type of infiltrate, one must always rule out a mycobacterial infection or a deep fungal infection
- Histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells
Lymphocytes
Plasma cells
Chromoblastomycosis

LEGEND
- Medlar bodies or copper pennies (appearance similar to black pennies) are characterized by clusters of brownish spores
- Neutrophils
- Multinucleated giant cells
Chromoblastomycosis

LEGEND
Presence of plasma cells and lymphocytes
- Medlar bodies
- Multinucleated giant cells
Collection of neutrophils
- Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia
