Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma

Mixed vascular tumor with capillary and lymphatic components, locally aggressive

Poorly circumscribed tumor

Nodules of spindle-shaped cells

Continuous spectrum with tufted angioma, which may represent a superficial variant

Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma

LEGEND

  • Poorly circumscribed sheets of spindle-shaped endothelial cells infiltrating the reticular dermis and extending into the hypodermis

  • Adjacent fat lobules infiltrated by tumor cells

  • Hemosiderin granules resulting from erythrocyte extravasation

Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma

LEGEND

Spindle-shaped cells associated with crescent-shaped vascular spaces resemble those seen in Kaposi sarcoma.

These two entities share histological similarities, hence the term kaposiform hemangioendothelioma.

  • Clear crescent-shaped clefts (also known as slit-like vascular lumina) are surrounded by infiltrative spindle-shaped endothelial cells.
