Trichoepithelioma – overview

LEGEND

Benign tumor with germinative follicular differentiation

Low magnification appearance resembles that of a basal cell carcinoma

Palisaded lobules formed by basaloid cells

Found in Brooke-Spiegler, Rombo, and Bazex-Dupré-Christol syndromes.

  • Small cyst formation may occur (transformation in the isthmic epithelium of the hair follicle).

Trichoepithelioma

LEGEND

Distinguished from basal cell carcinoma by:

  • Fibrous stoma

  • Absence of retraction clefts (see basal cell carcinoma section for comparison)

  • Absence of cellular atypia

Trichoepithelioma

Lobules composed of basaloid and palisaded cells

Trichoepithelioma

LEGEND

  • Fibrous and organized stroma at periphery of lobules

  • Absence of retraction

Trichoepithelioma

LEGEND

  • Palisaded organization
