In the presented case, the patient was previously known to have lupus; the lobular panniculitis was attributed to this condition.
Features supporting the diagnosis of lupus panniculitis, although absent in this case, include vacuolar interface dermatitis changes and the presence of mucin.
Inflammation localized at the level of the adipose tissue lobules
Adipocyte damage progressing to necrosis
Predominance of lymphocytic infiltrates within the lobules
